The Three Graces

Centuries ago many artists learnt their craft partly by drawing replicas of noteworthy works of art by master artists. This drawing follows that tradition, without questioning why. The Three Graces have been drawn in various forms since the original sculptor by Canova.

It is a rewarding undertaking to draw these masters. I used a Stabilo CarbOthello pastel pencil 1400/645 on a soft textured paper (I have forgotten its name). The uneven surface of the paper allows the pencil to leave its track here and there, as it glides across. It was the perfect effect for this drawing, especially for the background textures. It took some time to finish. The size of my drawing is 41×55 cm or 16×21.5 inches.

This drawing is copied from the Reubens original shown above. I wish to acknowledge peterpaulreubens.org for making the image available under Creative Commons License. It has not been changed and is not being used for commercial gain.
